How Apple Pay works — and why customers love it

21 October 2026 · 5 min read

Tokenisation, Face ID and one-tap checkout: a look at what happens when a customer pays with Apple Pay.

Tokens instead of card numbers

When a card is added to Apple Wallet, the real card number is replaced by a device-specific token. Merchants never see the actual card number.

Authentication built in

Each payment is approved with Face ID, Touch ID or the device passcode, which gives issuers strong confidence that the real cardholder is paying.

What it means for checkout

No typing card details means fewer abandoned baskets, especially on mobile. For many merchants, Apple Pay becomes the fastest-growing payment method after launch.
