Card acquiring

What is card acquiring? A plain-English guide for merchants

28 October 2026 · 6 min read

Who moves the money when a customer pays by card, and why your acquirer matters more than you think.

The four parties in every card payment

Every Visa or Mastercard payment involves the cardholder, the issuing bank that gave them the card, the card scheme that connects banks, and the acquirer that holds the merchant relationship.

The acquirer is the party that accepts the transaction on your behalf, submits it to the scheme and eventually pays the funds into your account.

What an acquirer actually does

Beyond moving money, an acquirer underwrites your business, monitors risk, handles chargebacks and makes sure you comply with scheme rules.

A good acquirer also optimises how transactions are sent, which directly influences how many payments get approved.

Why it matters for your revenue

Small differences in approval rates, settlement speed and fees compound quickly at scale. Choosing an acquiring partner is a commercial decision, not just a technical one.
